Before his UFC 90 upset to upstart Junior dos Santos, many felt that Fabricio Werdum was the number one contender to Randy Couture/Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s UFC heavyweight title. All of those feelings went straight out the window when Werdum suffered a devastating loss to dos Santos.
It only took a relatively unknown heavyweight 80 seconds to dispatch of the more experienced Werdum and that definitely puts a damper into his UFC title hopes.
Although he does own wins over both Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga, both are tainted. Vera was rusty and is undersized for a heavyweight, while Gonzaga was a shell of the fighter that challenged UFC Heavyweight champion Randy Couture at UFC 74.
To put things into perspective, Werdum’s loss to dos Santos on Saturday was a bigger upset than the Matt Serra vs. Georges St-Pierre fight at UFC 69, but that was for a title.
