Demian Maia (pictured) submitted his application for next dibs at the UFC welterweight title by submitting former interim champion Carlos Condit Saturday at UFC on FOX 21.
Maia controlled the action from the opening bell until the final tap, scoring a takedown within seconds and schooling “The Natural Born Killer” once it hit the mat. The Brazilian jiu jitsu ace slapped on a rear-naked choke and Condit was forced to cry uncle.
The victory marked Maia’s sixth straight. He was in tears after the win, knowing it was the most impressive and significant of his career.
Stephen Thompson is slated to get first crack at freshly-minted champ Tyron Woodley’s belt. If that’s the case, Maia said he wants to sit and wait for the winner. The problem there is former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre is ready to return from his “break” from MMA and it is believed he would get an immediate shot at the belt he willingly vacated at the end of 2013 when he steps back in the cage.
UFC on FOX 21 took place inside Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
