Who needs Robbie Lawler when you can have Kelvin Gastelum instead? Just kidding, Lawler would have been far more exciting, but what can you do?
On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White confirmed with ESPN.com that Donald Cerrone (pictured) will now face Gastelum at UFC 205 after Lawler pulled out of the November 12 event, reportedly so he could have more time to recover from July 30th’s vicious knockout loss to Tyron Woodley that cost him his welterweight title.
Cerrone is a perfect 3-0 since moving up to the welterweight division. “Cowboy” has finished off all of those victims before the final horn. After last month’s TKO over Rick Story, Cerrone said he’d be more than happy to jump right back into action for the UFC’s much anticipated return to New York.
Gastelum has alternated between wins and losses over his past five outings. After a posting win over Nate Marquardt in a middleweight affair, White allowed Gastelum to drop back down to welterweight hoping that his weight issues were behind him.
“The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner is looking to build off July’s unanimous decision victory over former welterweight champ Johny Hendricks.
UFC 205 takes place inside Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. A main event has yet to be announced for the highly anticipated event.
Here is the show’s currently lineup:
