The UFC isn’t holding anything back for their highly anticipated debut on Versus as the planet’s biggest MMA organization just added an electrifying heavyweight clash between Cheick Kongo and Paul Buentello to their “UFC on Versus” extravaganza.
Buentello ended his four-year Octagon hiatus when he dropped a majority decision to Stefan Struve at UFC 107 last month. Although much of his resume has gone under-appreciated, he holds an impressive 27-11 record and has rolled off wins in 12 of his last 15 contests.
His only losses during that run have come at the hands of the aforementioned Struve, former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski and current Strikeforce title holder Alistair Overeem.
Kongo appeared to have his ticket punched for a heavyweight title fight after he rattled off three consecutive TKO wins over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk and Antoni Hardonk. However, his championship hopes were quickly derailed when he dropped a unanimous decision to the up-and-coming Cain Velasquez at UFC 99.
The Wolfslair MMA Academy-trained fighter parlayed that loss by getting submitted in the 1stRound by former two-time UFC champ Frank Mir at UFC 107. Although Kongo owns an impressive stand-up arsenal, he’ll be the first to admit that his ground game leaves a lot to be desired, thus, the back-to-back L’s.
The UFC also confirmed that a lightweight scrap between Spencer Fisher and Duane Ludwig will go down inside the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colorado.
Here are the other fighters rumored for the March 21st Versus broadcast:
