Say what you want about Ronda Rousey, but the former UFC bantamweight champion still got paid for 48 seconds of work on Friday night.
Rousey tied UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor as the UFC’s highest paid fighter with $3 million in disclosed salary entering her return bout against bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Rousey ended up making a cool $62,500 for each second of tonight’s fight. Oh, and that’s NOT including Rousey’s pay-per-view bonus!
Rousey was gifted everything she wanted in her return bout – an immediate crack at the current champ, no media obligations and a fat paycheck. Some thought Nunes should have been resentful about the UFC’s biased treatment towards their cash cow, but the “Lioness” surprisingly wasn’t.
Instead of taking it out on anyone before the fight, she decided to make Rousey pay for it during their quick, lopsided scrap.
Rousey played the part of a fighter who got her groove back after a 13-month layoff – intense walk, no-nonsense stare – but the big question was how she would respond after getting socked in the face for the first time since Holly Holm slapped her silly. Rousey didn’t respond well. In fact, she didn’t respond at all.
Rousey has not lost two straight, in incredibly embarrassing fashion, and most are convinced her days inside the cage are done. It’s hard to believe Sports Illustrated dubbed Rousey “The World’s Most Dominant Athlete” just 19 months ago.
UFC 207 took place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
