There was no love lost between Cody “No Love” Garbrandt (pictured) and Dominick Cruz entering Friday’s UFC 207 shootout, and it showed for 25 minutes. The bitter rivals taunted each other throughout their five-round affair – well, mainly Galbrandt – and the youngster backed up all of his smack talk.
Cruz is the most dominant bantamweight champion MMA has ever know. Or, we should now say he was the most dominant bantamweight champion MMA had ever know. It wasn’t merely a passing of the torch, Garbrandt straight up jacked Cruz for the throne and the “Dominator” couldn’t do a thing about it.
Garbrandt was criticized for being a one-dimensional fighter entering the scrap, but the 25-year-old unleashed his entire repertoire, seemingly making Cruz look like he had turned ancient overnight.
After the lopsided (48-46, 48-47, 48-46) unanimous decision scores were read (which fight the 48-47 judge watching?), Garbrandt enjoyed watching UFC president Dana White wrap the gold around his waist. At the post-fight press conference, Garbrandt said he’d be more than happy to grant Cruz an immediate rematch.
UFC 207 took place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
