Croatian fighter Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic confirmed that he will get a rematch against bitter rival Alistair Overeem at K-1 Dynamite!! 2008 on New Year’s Eve.  Overeem dominated Cro Cop in their previous meeting at Dream.6 in September, however Overeem landed one too many illegal knees to the groin which prevented the former Pride champion from continuing.

Cro Cop confirmed his participation on the December 31st event in a video interview with the popular Croatian website dnevnik.hr. Cro Cop also stated that he will be entering the bout with a knee injury that he’ll have surgically repaired after the bout.

Leading up to their initial showdown, the usually reserved Cro Cop was involved in a verbal battle with the brash fighter from the Netherlands.  It led many MMA enthusiasts to believe that Overeem re-lit the fire under Cro Cop, and the Croatian would be back to his old form.

Once known as one of the most devastating fighters in all of MMA, he had lost two of his last three bouts in embarrassing fashion prior to facing Overeem.

To the surprise of many, Overeem was the one that was able to back up his talk. He overpowered Cro Cop throughout the 1stRound of their battle, however his over-aggressiveness cost him a win.

While engaged in a body lock, Overeem landed an illegal knee to Cro Cop’s groin on two separate occasions. The second one left him laying on the mat for the entire 10 minute recovery period.  The shot seemed to incapacitate Cro Cop, and the fight was ruled a No Contest.

“I’m sorry this great fight had to end this way,” Overeem stated immediately after the fight. “It was a mistake to make early in the fight. I wanted to finish the fight with Cro Cop with a KO or submission in a fair way.”

However, a day after the fight, Overeem was telling a different story. He insinuated that Cro Cop used the illegal blows as an excuse to not continue, since he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to win the fight.

This rematch is sure to be an explosive one for “Dynamite!!”
