UFC Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov (pictured) was THIS close to possibly scoring a life-changing money fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. On Friday, Nurmagomedov was taken to the hospital prior to weighing in for his UFC 209 interim lightweight title tilt with Tony Ferguson after becoming ill.

As it turns out, Nurmagomedov was rushed to the doctor due to complications from weight cutting. As a result, the undefeated Russian was unable to weigh-in and tomorrow’s highly anticipated shootout was canceled.

“UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues. He was treated and has been discharged,” the UFC expressed in an official statement. “The scheduled interim lightweight championship bout between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 has been cancelled on the doctor’s recommendation.”

Nurmagomedov missed weight one other time in eight UFC outings. Five fights ago, “The Eagle” soared onto the scale at 158.5 pounds in his unanimous decision win over Abel Trujillo at UFC 160.

It is unknown if Ferguson will still receive his show money. Most likely he will since he made weight at 154.5 pounds.

The victor of this fight was slated for a lightweight title unification bout against McGregor in their next outing. There is no reason to believe Ferguson won’t be McGregor’s next MMA opponent.

Despite their heated rivalry, Ferguson issued a tweet in support of his nemesis after receiving the disappointing news:

The UFC did not announce which preliminary bout will now get promoted to the main card.
