There was high drama and confusion during Friday’s UFC 210 weigh-ins.

The New York State Athletic Commission and UFC were holding early weigh-ins that were to conclude at 11AM local time. With just five minutes remaining until the cutoff, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (pictured) and challenger Anthony Johnson had yet to hit the scale.

Cormier finally appeared at 10:56 and stripped naked. The dejected champ clocked 206.2 pounds, 1.2 pounds over the limit for a light heavyweight title tilt.

The former Olympian missed weight and the main event had lost serious significance! Or so everyone thought…

Cormier reemerged just a couple minutes later and weighed in again. Wait up, since when do fighters get a second attempt at early weigh-ins (back to that in a bit)? Cormier somehow managed to lose the excess weight in just minutes by making 205 pounds on the dot.

Speaking of cutting it close, Johnson then slides in just seconds before 11AM. Johnson has missed weight in the past, so there was concern that the reason he was lagging was due to another arduous weight cut.

Johnson shocked everyone by easily scoring 203.8 pounds on the scale.

The title fight is on!

OK, now why was Cormier allowed to weigh-in twice? NYSAC executive director Tony Giardina said New York has a different policy for title bouts. Fighters in championship contests are allowed a two-hour window if they miss weight on their first attempt.

Non-title fights are not afforded the same luxury in the NYC.

Um, OK…

As if that wasn’t crazy enough, the NYSAC then canceled the strawweight tango between Pearl Gonzalez and Cynthia Calvillo, after both contestants made weight, because, wait for it… Gonzalez has breast implants!

New York banns breast implants in combat sports.

The UFC has yet to address either situation. There are rumblings that the UFC frantically working behind the scenes to salvage the Gonzalez-Calvillo bout.
