Several reports have surfaced over the past 24 hours regarding the UFC’s first event in Abu Dhabi, which is tentatively scheduled for April 10th. Champions Anderson Silva and BJ Penn are expected to co-headline UFC 112 with title defenses.
“We’re going to have a big press conference in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, with our new partners from the region, Flash,” Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC’s managing director of international expansion told multiple media outlets. “[Zuffa CEO] Lorenzo [Fertitta] and myself will be there with some of the biggest names on the UFC roster. I don’t want to give away the official announcement, but this will be a very unique show and not just because the card itself will be as good as any in UFC history.”
Dave Meltzer from Yahoo! Sports clarifies what Zelaznik meant by UFC 112 being a “unique show” saying:
“The show is scheduled to be the first outdoor event in UFC history, as there is no suitable indoor arena for such an event.”
Silva will be returning from elbow surgery to defend his crown against Vitor Belfort in the night’s featured bout, while Penn will look to hold off a gritty Frankie Edgar in a lightweight title bout in the evening’s co-main event.
Also expected to be announced is a match-up between former welterweight champion Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie.
Hughes defeated Renzo’s cousin, Royce Gracie, at UFC 60 in Los Angeles over four years ago, so there’s added motivation for Renzo to avenge that loss.
5thRound.com will have more details regarding UFC 112 next Wednesday as soon as the press conference is over.
