Just when you thought UFC 214 couldn’t get more star-studded, in steps Tyron Woodley.
The UFC welterweight champion announced during Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight” that he will put his strap on the line against Demian Maia in the July 29 event.
Honda Center in Anaheim hosts the festivities.
Of course, the card already held two title fights. UFC light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier gets a rematch against former king Jon Jones in the show’s featured attraction. Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Tonya Evinger will also vie for the vacant women’s UFC featherweight crown in Cali.
Woodley is fresh off his first successful title defense in two tries. After a highly controversial majority draw against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 after beating Robbie Lawler to capture the crown, Woodley walked away with a slightly more convincing majority decision in March’s rematch.
Their initial tango was a barn burner. Their sequel was merely a bummer.
This championship affair been a long time coming for Maia. The 39-year-old veteran has ratted off seven consecutive victories to cement his next dibs status. The Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist was seen just last month taking a split decision over Jorge Masvidal.
Maia came up short in his only other UFC title fight back in 2010 in a unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva.
