Sengoku 6 Results: Gomi Upset

Sengoku 6 took place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan early Saturday morning. The event included the Semi-finals and Finals of World Victory Road’s Lightweight and Middleweight Grand Prix Tournaments, as well as three individual bouts.  One of the individual bouts had top ranked lightweight Takanori Gomi taking on little known Sergey Golyaev. If MMA fans didn’t know of Golyaev before, they certainly know him now as he pulled off a miraculous split decision upset on the Japanese fighter’s home turf.

WVR intended the bout to be a warm-up for Gomi, as they wanted him to take on the winner of the Lightweight Grand Prix Tournament, which turned out to be Satoru Kitaoka, to become the promotion’s first ever lightweight champion in early 2009.

Gomi (29-4) was once known as the division’s most feared fighter, however in his last four bouts he has posted a meager 1-2 record, as well as a No Contest. At the time, the No Contest was a submission loss to Nick Diaz at Pride 33 in early 2007.  Fortunately for Gomi, after the bout Diaz tested positive for marijuana, letting him off the hook.
