The sequel between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones lived up to all the hype, which included a dramatic and violent ending.
Jones posted a convincing unanimous decision victory against his archenemy in January 2015, but he wanted to make a more definitive statement the second time around.
Jones got off to a fast start, winning most of the opening round. Cormier, however, started to find his groove towards the end of the frame, giving him even more confidence entering the second period.
Cormier was doing a solid job of closing the distance and eliminating Jones’ massive reach advantage. “DC” became so comfortable that he was even smack talking his bitter rival during their tango.
The third round offered more back-and-forth action, until Jones unleashed a left head kick that landed flush on the side of Cormier’s dome. Cormier was reeling and Jones went in for the kill.
Jones unloaded several unanswered elbows to the head on the ground before referee “Big” John McCarthy finally pulled him off.
The official stoppage came at 3:01 in the third frame.
Cormier was still on queer street when UFC president Dana White wrapped the light heavyweight belt around Jones’ waist.
UFC 214 took place inside Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.
