With only eight days until the curtain is drawn for “Strikeforce: Miami,” heavyweight Bobby Lashley has finally been assigned an opponent.
MMAJunkie.com is reporting that the TNA wrestling superstar will face MMA veteran Wes Sims inside the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida on January 30th.
It’s been a pretty interesting adventure in locating an opponent for Lashely’s Strikeforce debut as he was originally expected to face Yohan Banks, however the Florida State Boxing Commission declined to approve the scrap just two weeks before gametime as they deemed the bout “not competitive.”
Jimmy Ambriz then emerged as Lashley’s next potential foe, however Strikeforce brass chose to cancel the rumored contest for undisclosed reasons.
Sims is a three-time UFC veteran and “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights” contestant. The MMA funnyman owns a 22-12-1 professional record and is currently enjoying a three-fight winning streak. He was last seen knocking out Jason DeAngelo at “Full Contact Fight Series 29” in November.
Lashley stakes claim to a perfect 4-0 record, but most importantly, has shown drastic levels of improvement in his MMA game each time he takes the cage. Only one of his fights have gone past the 1stRound. In his last outing this past June, Lashley submitted Bob Sapp (via PUNCHES) at “Ultimate Chaos.”
Here are the fighters expected to participate on the Showtime broadcast:
David Gomez vs. Craig Oxley
Sabah Homasi vs. John Kelly
Pablo Alfonso vs. Marcos da Matta
Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs
Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims
Herschel Walker vs. Greg Nagy
Melvin Manhoef vs. Robbie Lawler
Marloes Coenen vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (Strikeforce Women’s Champion)
