Regardless of how much Randy Couture and Mark Coleman downplay it, Shawn Tompkins training and cornering Coleman for UFC 109 has to be an advantage for the former Pride Grand Prix champion.
“I have no real secrets. Shawn doesn’t have an inside track on me,” Couture said during a recent UFC 109 conference call.
Tompkins spent years as the striking coach at Xtreme Couture, so to say that he didn’t learn anything about Couture or his tendencies would be a disservice to how good of a trainer Tompkins is.
The amount of success the Xtreme Couture camp has enjoyed over the last several years can be attributed to a multitude of factors, however Tompkins’ name seems to be the common denominator.
“I’m not worried about Shawn being in his corner because he’s going to help Mark be at his best. I see that as great way to ensure we have a great fight,” Couture continued.
Coleman agreed with Couture on the media call by saying, “It’s not too much of an advantage. I’ve seen Randy many times. I’m really aware Randy’s capable of changing his style on any given day.”
