Diego Sanchez, the original winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” has just confirmed his return to the welterweight division as he will be taking on John Hathaway at UFC 114. YES!!!
“Finally got a opponent john hathaway he’s 12-0 tough kid from the uk. we will be fighting may 29 in VEGAS!!!!! its on!!!” Sanchez wrote on his Twitter account.
Although Sanchez was relentless in his efforts against lightweight champion BJ Penn at UFC 107, the Hawaiian utterly dominated Sanchez before unleashing a 5thRound head kick that literally spit Diego’s forehead in two.
Following the TKO loss, Sanchez announced his intentions of returning to the 170-pound division.
“YES IM GOING BACK TO WELTERWEIGHT IM LOVING MY NEW DIET.I WANT KOS OR FITCH BUT ANY TOP GUY WILL DO JUST WANT TO GIVE U FANS THE BEST FIGHT,” he tweeted back on January 18th.
Instead of throwing Sanchez to the wolves, such as top welterweight contenders Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck, the UFC instead chose to have Sanchez return against an up-and-comer in Hathaway. At the same time, it provides the organization a chance to see if Hathaway is a legitimate threat at 170lbs.
Hathaway holds a perfect 12-0 professional record, including three straight inside the Octagon. He was last seen taking a unanimous decision over Paul Taylor at UFC 105.
UFC 114 is expected to take place inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
