Don’t expect 46-year-old Randy Couture to utter the word ‘retirement’ anytime soon. With a UFC 109 main event that is almost 12 years in the making, Couture will finally fight fellow UFC Hall-of-Fame member Mark Coleman.
Let’s rewind the clock back to UFC 17 when Coleman was set to face Couture in May 1998. Unfortunately, an injury Couture suffered while training for the National Wrestling Tournament forced “The Natural” to withdraw from the highly anticipated bout.
Fast-forward to “UFC 109: Relentless” this Saturday night inside the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas where Couture looks to extend his illustrious career. Although most considered Couture old five years ago, the legend sees no end in sight as he’s open to potential light heavyweight or heavyweight bouts in the future.
“You know I think they’re certainly top guys in the weight class and Machida’s walking around with the belt right now, so he’s certainly got a big target on his back,” Couture recently said. “But here you kind of got to go where opportunity is and if something else presents itself back at the heavyweight division, I’m certainly going to entertain that.”
Couture has said in the past that he’d listen if the UFC presented another opportunity to fight reigning UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, but with the slew of up-and-coming talent lining up for a shot at Lesnar, Couture may never get another look.
With a win on Saturday night, Couture could very well find himself in the thick of the light heavyweight division’s title picture which is something many expect for him to do as he enters the Octagon a 4-to-1 favorite.
However, don’t count out the 45-year old “Hammer” either…
