According to reports, the UFC has offered current UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva a light heavyweight bout against former 205-pound champ Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell at UFC 95. The event will be held at the O2 Arena in London, England on February 21st. Silva is currently riding a nine-fight winning streak, and was victorious in his only light heavyweight fight for the UFC. Liddell on the other hand, has dropped three of his last four bouts.
The Sun, a reputable UK newspaper, was the first to report this rumored bout.
“SunSport understands Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, 33, has been asked to appear on the card, with a potential bout with light heavyweight star Chuck Liddell already being mooted,” the paper states.
Although Silva is one of the world’s most dangerous fighters, he is coming off his most disappointing performance to date. Prior to his UFC 90 bout against Patrick Cote, none of Silva’s previous eight UFC opponents managed to last past the 2ndRound. Cote extended the champ into the 3rdRound, before an injury to his knee prevented him from continuing.
“The Iceman” was last seen getting knocked out cold after he caught a right hook from Rashad Evans at UFC 88. If this fight does come to fruition, it will be an extremely risky one for Liddell, who will be turning 39 this December. Another devastating loss could certainly send the former champion into retirement.
