The UFC officially announced that the long awaited light heavyweight matchup between Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida will take place at UFC 94. The battle of two fighters boasting perfect 13-0 records was initially slated to take place at UFC 89, however Silva suffered a back injury while training for the bout. UFC 94 will take place on January 31st at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Machida, who is one of the division’s top contenders, was offered another fight when Silva went down, however he was adamant about waiting to square off against a healthy Silva. He was victorious in his last UFC bout against former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 84.
Silva, the American Top Team phenom, has skyrocketed up the totem pole, posting one impressive performance after another. Like Machida, Silva’s last fight was also on the UFC 84 card, where he knocked out Antonio Mendes in the 1stRound.
This is a very important fight for both fighters in determining their standing within the UFC’s deepest division. The winner could certainly find themselves in a title match in his fight.
