A day after the NFL announced they wouldn’t fine New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan for his obscene gesture towards hecklers at Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Miami” event, FoxSports.com’s Jay Glazer has come to the controversial coach’s defense stating one fan was completely out of line and the middle finger was the least he deserved.

“This was a guy who was going out of his way to incite a fight, to incite some sort of violence to get the head coach of the Jets to ruin his job and to really put Rex in a place he didn’t need to be,” Glazer told New York radio station WFAN on Thursday afternoon.

During a live Showtime interview inside the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, Ryan egged-on the boisterous crowd by telling them his Jets would sweep their Miami Dolphins next season.

“I’d like to thank everybody here in Miami. I know they love me,” Ryan said with a grin. “I want to just tell everybody in Miami, hey, we’re coming to beat you twice next year.”

The booing was so loud, much of Ryan’s interview could not be heard over the venue’s sound system. The following day, a cellphone camera picture of Ryan flipping-off the crowd appeared and the story has grown TMZ-like legs from there.

Glazer, who attended the show with Ryan, 49ers superstar linebacker Patrick Willis and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Trent Cole, said Ryan “showed the greatest restraint” as the likely Dolphins fan’s behavior was completely inappropriate.

“I mean it was unbelievable, and he just kept going on and on,” Glazer said. “Then he said, ‘I hate you. I hope you die, you fat piece of crap,’ and then spit at him.”

Ryan immediately issued an apology for his “stupid and inappropriate” behavior after the infamous picture was produced, however it wasn’t enough for the Jets as they fined him $50,000 earlier this week.

The NFL chose not to dock Ryan after conducting their own investigation.
