Chael Sonnen, the UFC’s new #1 middleweight contender, had a lot to say following his huge upset victory over Nate Marquardt at “UFC 109: Relentless”, especially about his potential opponents who are set to fight for the title he wants at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.
If you ask most fighters if they had a choice between fighting Anderson Silva, who hasn’t lost a fight in four years, or Vitor Belfort, most guys would say bring on Belfort.
Not Sonnen.
Maybe he’s being the same guy who called out Anderson Silva and his manager Ed Soares, or maybe we should start listening to him because he proved a lot to everybody at UFC 109.
“I hope Anderson [Silva] wins because I think Vitor’s [Belfort] a lot tougher fighter. If I had to choose between the two, I’m gonna take the low road and take the easier opponent to get to the championship,” Sonnen said at the post-fight press conference.
If you watch the video, even Matt Serra, who sat next to Sonnen at the press conference, had a grin on his face.
“Vitor Belfort in truth has never lost a fight in the stand-up realm. The blueprint to beat Vitor is out there but it’s not to stand-up with him,” Sonnen said explaining his reasoning behind wanting to fight Belfort as opposed to Silva.
Before wrapping up his time on the mic for the evening, Sonnen went ahead and gave his prediction for the middleweight showdown saying, “I can’t wait for that fight, but I am picking Vitor in it.”

Sonnen to address you comments about Vitor and Anderson. Vitor may be stronger than the spider, but the spider is smarter, faster and more accurate. And you said you were a Vitor fan….well he did lose a striking battle with Chuck Lidell. He wasn’t KO’d but he was dumped on his ass and Chuck was not. The fast pin point striking of the spider will find the mark.

I think we can all take Chael’s comments with a little grain of salt. He’s a great speaker and uses it to his advantage. I think he actually prefers for people to not like him.

I think he was just ‘on’ when he fought Nate, and Nate was just ‘off’. They fight again and I think Sonnen eats leather. I think half the top welter-weights but beat him (GSP, Fitch, Alves, even Paulo Thiago).
