After suffering his first loss in nearly six years, UFC welterweight Jon Fitch is ready to get back into the Octagon. It looks like the division’s former top contender will square off against the popular Japanese fighter Akihiro Gono at UFC 94 on January 31st. These two were initially slated to face each other at UFC 82, however Gono suffered a hand injury and was replaced by Chris Wilson.
Fitch was last seen losing to 170-pound champ Georges St-Pierre via unanimous decision at UFC 87. Although Fitch fought valiantly, GSP was simply too much for the challenger. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter shouldn’t feel too badly though, winning 15 out of your last 16 fights is nothing to be ashamed of.
He will be looking to get his career back on track against an experienced Gono. Although he is only 1-1 inside of the Octagon, he has competed in 49 professional MMA fights, with the majority of his work coming in Japan.
Gono suffered a tough split decision loss to Dan Hardy at UFC 89.
UFC 94 will be taking place on Superbowl Weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by one of the most highly anticipated rematches in MMA history, as St-Pierre will look to defend his title against BJ Penn.
GSP previously defeated Penn via split decision back in 2005.
