Ron Kruk of HDNet Fights got the chance to speak with Randy Couture (16-8-0) at last night’s ‘HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon.’ Couture gave an update on his UFC contract and his future intentions.
Even though Couture’s calendar is filled in 2008 with five new Xtreme Couture’s opening up, he’s going to continue training for a possible fight with Fedor Emelianenko (26-1-0) in M-1.
“Unless the UFC wants to do a co-promotion with M-1 and make the Fedor fight happen, I’m going to have to wait until my contract expires,” Couture said.
The only problem with Couture’s willingness to wait is his age. He’d be 45 years old and without a fight in 14 months, although Couture was able to shake off the cage rust against Tim Sylvia en route to capturing the UFC heavyweight championship, Sylvia is a far cry from Emelianenko.
“I have no intention of breaching that contract, that expires in July, my employment contract expires with them in October so I would assume that the soonest you’ll see me fight [Fedor] Emelianenko would be in October,” Couture went on to say.
Could Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White still do everything in their power to prevent the fight from happening? Absolutely. We’re going to have to wait and see just like Couture.
