Will Chael Sonnen Save UFC 112 With Vitor Belfort Out Against Anderson Silva?

After shocking Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, maybe Chael Sonnen has superhero abilities … like predicting the future. During Tuesday’s appearance on Sirius XM Fight Club, Sonnen told Ariel Helwani that he was already preparing for UFC 112 …  just in case.

With yesterday’s shocking news that Vitor Belfort suffered a shoulder injury that would force him to pull out of his title bout against champion Anderson Silva, many are wondering if Sonnen will step in and save the UFC’s debut extravaganza in Abu Dhabi.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports spoke to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and was told that Sonnen can’t resume sparring until March 9th and can’t get cleared to fight any earlier than March 24th due to a cut on his forehead.

Asking Sonnen to fight the world’s baddest middleweight on such a quick turnaround is a lot to ask of anyone, making the Team Quest-trained fighter do it without being able to go 100% until a couple weeks before showtime is insane.

The question is, would Sonnen take a shot at the golden ticket right now just because the opportunity has presented itself?

My assumption is that Sonnen will step up to the plate as a title shot against “The Spider” in his prime would be too hard to pass up. The only thing that could prevent this from happening is Sonnen not getting medically cleared to fight.

All of a sudden, Chael Sonnen has become the hot topic of the UFC …  just ask Twitter (#Chael #Sonnen).
