After countless UFC fight cards were ravaged by injuries last year, 2010 hasn’t gotten off to a much better start as welterweight Anthony Johnson has been forced out of his highly anticipated March 21st scrap with John Howard.
MMAFighting.com confirmed “Rumble’s” knee injury early Sunday morning with Johnson’s manager, Ken Pavia.
Johnson appeared to be on a one-way ticket to a title match before he was derailed by Josh Koscheck at UFC 106. Although Johnson fought valiantly, Kos was able to impose his will and earn an impressive 2ndRound rear-naked submission.
Howard, who recently inked a new four-fight contract with the UFC, has rolled off six straight wins and is perfect in his three Octagon battles. Although Howard’s current run is impressive, he has never seen an animal like Johnson before and it appears that he won’t in the foreseeable future.
With only five weeks before showtime, it’s unknown whether the organization will try to locate a suitable replacement for Johnson or pull Howard from the event in hopes of salvaging the bitter feud for a later fight card.
A light heavyweight scrap between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera will be the night’s featured attraction inside the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colorado. Here are the fighters slated/rumored for the star-studded show:
