Monte Cox has clarified the status of a proposed fight between top lightweights Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez. Cox, who manages Alvarez, told Sherdog that the fight has been verbally agreed upon by both sides but no contract has been signed as of yet.
Alvarez and Aoki were supposed to meet at the Dream Grand Prix Finals, but Alvarez suffered an injury and hand selected Joachim Hansen to replace him. Hansen subsequently defeated Aoki in the finals to become the Dream Lightweight Grand Prix champion.
Aoki was able to get himself back on the winning track after defeating WEC veteran Todd Moore this past September.
Eddie Alvarez on the other hand, is looking to continue his five fight win streak and further cement his status as a top-ranked lightweight.
