James Thompson Headed to Sengoku

Most MMA fans remember heavyweight James Thompson as the man who had his cauliflowered ear explode in his bout against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson. However, he was also the first man to expose the street fighting legend, almost defeating him in the process. It now appears as though the former/current EliteXC fighter will be competing at World Victory Road’s Sengoku 7 event on January 4th.

Thompson’s manager, Ken Pavia, confirmed with MMAJunkie.com that although he is still technically under contract to EliteXC, he is allowed to pursue one-off bouts until the organization is able to get their financial situation under wraps.

“The numbers are done,” Pavia stated. “It’s just a matter of opponents. So Jan. 4 in World Victory Road — it’s one of the biggest paydays that my organization has seen. Big, big money fight.”

The popular Japanese organization may be rewarding Thompson for his efforts against Kimbo, as many thought that he submitted the YouTube legend back in May. Unfortunately neither the referee nor the television cameras were able to see the tap, however many of the fighters sitting ringside swear by it.

January will mark seven months since Thompson’s last fight, so ring rust might become an issue. Thompson and Co. were offered another bout overseas, however Pavia stated that they were presented the fight on too short of notice.

“He was offered King Mo (Lawal) in Japan, but it was on three weeks’ notice, and it was not an advisable fight,” said Pavia. “You’re talking about a wrestler of that caliber on three weeks’ notice. So we politely declined, and they offered us [another fight].”
