The WEC will be kicking off 2009 with a bang on Sunday as they will be holding their WEC 38 event at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California. WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will be headlining the night’s card, as he will be defending his title against Donald Cerrone. Varner is ready for anything that Cerrone has to offer.

“Donald Cerrone is probably one of the most dangerous fighters I’m ever going to fight,” Varner said. “He’s so good at kickboxing, and he’s got a good, tight jiu-jitsu game on his back. I’ve had my eye on him for a while.”

Although this bout will only be Varner’s second title defense, he certainly enjoys being the division’s top dog.

“I don’t even feel like a world champ, but there’s obviously a target on my back,” stated the 155-pound champion. “Everybody’s gunning for that world title. There are some big guns coming after me, but you know what? I like it. It’s good to be on top.”

Cerrone holds a perfect 9-0 professional record, and has undoubtedly earned his shot at Varner’s title. However, the champ is more than willing to accept the challenge.

“I have a lot of respect for Cerrone, but I consider him just one more undefeated fighter that I have to put in his place,” stated a confident Varner.
