UFC president Dana White confirmed that Thaigo Alves is still the top contender to the welterweight title. The American Top Team Fighter has been on a tear since losing to Jon Fitch early on in his UFC career. Alves has rolled off seven consecutive victories in one of the UFC’s most talented divisions.

Many felt that he was deserving of a shot at the title after he dominated Matt Hughes at UFC 85, however was forced to take a bout against Josh Koscheck at UFC 90. His performance there was equally as impressive, solidifying his place in the 170-pound pecking order.

Alves, like many other MMA enthusiasts, will be at full attention as current 170-pound champion Georges St-Pierre defends his title against BJ Penn at UFC 94. This mega-fight is one of the most highly anticipated rematches in MMA history, as GSP had controversially defeated Penn by a close split decision in 2006.
