Late Thursday afternoon, Affliction Entertainment announced that current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral will be taking on UFC castoff Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at their “Day of Reckoning” event on January 24th. Sokoudjou was released from the UFC last month after he posted a disappointing 1-2 record for the organization.
Sokoudjou entered the UFC as one of the most highly touted PrideFC free agents after he knocked out two world class fighters, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona, in succession. For whatever reason, he was unable to duplicate that success in one of the UFC’s deepest divisions.
Babalu, another former UFC fighter, defeated Bobby Southworth for the 205-pound Strikeforece title at last month’s “Destruction” event. That was his fourth consecutive victory.
“Day of Reckoning” will be Affliction’s second ever MMA event, and will be taking place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
