The highly anticipated battle between Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki will determine the first ever WAMMA lightweight champion. The two were set to simply square off in an epic lightweight contest on “K-1 DYNAMITE!! 2008,” however their bout will now have title implications.
The news came early this morning after WAMMA issued a press release stating that they were now prepared to crown their first ever champion in the division. The winner that night will not receive the title, however. He will be rewarded the belt at a separate ceremony at a later date.
Alvarez was initially slated to take on Aoki at Dream.5 to become the organization’s first ever lightweight champion. Unfortunately, Alvarez was forced to pull out due to a facial injury he suffered in his semifinal win over Tatsuya Kawajiri earlier that evening.
Aoki had defeated MMA veteran Caol Uno in the semifinals, however went on to lose in the finals against Joachim Hansen, Alvarez’ replacement.
