UFC president Dana White confirmed that Japanese middleweight Yushin Okami has earned himself a crack at the 185-pound title. Current champion Anderson Silva is slated to take on Thales Leites at UFC 97 on April 18th, and Okami will face the winner of that matchup.
“Yushin Okami will be getting a title shot. Definitely,” White said.
Okami was once again dominant in his victory over the crafty Dean Lister this past Saturday at UFC 92. It was believed that the loser of that matchup was in jeopardy of being cut from the UFC as the organization continues to trim their roster.
It was rumored that Okami was going to take on Silva at UFC 90, however he injured his hand during training and was taken out of consideration for the bout.
Interestingly enough, Okami was the last man to defeat Silva, however the UFC never used that to promote a fight between the two. The victory was not a clean one however, as Silva was disqualified for landing an illegal knee in the 1stRound. That bout took place on “Rumble on the Rock 8” in 2006.
