Legendary boxing coach Freddie Raoch has worked with former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski for almost a year. Roach is confident that their extensive work together will prove to be the difference in his bout against WAMMA champion Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” event this weekend.
“If I saw him in the street, I wouldn’t be scared of him,” Roach said of Emelianenko’s unassuming demeanor. “But I’d be wrong.”
Although Roach is fairly new to the MMA game, he understands that Emelianenko is highly skilled, and is capable of dominating an opponent at any aspect of the game. However, come Saturday, Roach advises the Russian to not test his client’s hands.
“As far as his stand up game, we’ll kill him,” says Roach. “If we can keep the fight standing up, if he chooses to fight us like a man, we’ll dominate him.”
To be dominated is something that Emelianenko has never experienced in his illustrious career. In fact, he has dominated all that have crossed his path, compiling a 28-1 record. However, Roach feels that he has figured out how to expose the “unbeatable” heavyweight.
“Just be smart with it,” he says. “Use your angles when they’re necessary, but after you land a combination, because after you land a combination with Fedor, he’s going to throw back. That’s his instinct. He throws one punch after the other. He’s very predictable. He makes the same moves every time. He’s very common. His boxing game is weak.”
Most MMA enthusiasts believe that this bout will be a one-sided affair, and Roach agrees wholeheartedly. Although it is the underdog that he sees leaving the ring with the belt around his waist.
“From what I can see, I think Andre’s going to be sharper,” he says. “I think we’re going to knock him out.”
