The WEC rang in the New Year by eliminating their middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. The organization made the strategic move to focus more on the lighter weight classes, and it appears that they are going to get even lighter. It is being reported the the organization will add the flyweight (125-pound) division to their promotion.
Zuffa, LLC, the parent company of the UFC and the WEC, is clearly looking to develop the WEC into a major MMA organization of its own, as opposed to serving as a minor league to the UFC.
Although the WEC and the UFC have the lightweight and welterweight divisions that overlap, the UFC will continue to promote the big named fighters and larger weight classes, while the WEC will look to establish themselves as the desired destination for the lighter fighters.
Look for the WEC to debut the flyweight division on their yet-to-be announced April card.
