The WEC has announced that Joseph Benavidez will be taking on Jeff Curran at WEC 40 on April 5th in a pivotal 135-pound matchup. The winner of this top contender bout will get the next crack at facing current champion Miguel Torres, who will be headlining this event.
Benavidez’ stock has skyrocketed in the past year. He holds a perfect 10-0 record, and was impressive in his WEC debut victory over Danny Martinez in December. Up until his unanimous decision win over Martinez, Benavidez had ended all of his fights before the final bell.
Curran holds a 29-10-1 professional record, however hasn’t fought since June of 2008. After losing his last bout to current featherweight champion Mike Brown, Curran announced that he was dropping down to the bantamweight division.
