After “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones” provided an exciting Sunday night of MMA action, UFC president Dana White awarded four fighters an extra $50,000 each for their special performances inside the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
Instead of giving out Fight of the Night honors as customary, the UFC decided to anoint three Knockout of the Night winners and one for Submission of the Night.
The card was headlined by a light heavyweight showdown between former rising star Brandon Vera and current red-hot prospect Jon Jones.
Jones earned his dough when he decided to stick his left elbow in Vera’s right eye socket, ultimately bringing their scrap to its violent conclusion.
John Howard stood over Daniel Roberts in the 1stRoundon of their preliminary bout and dove back into Roberts’ guard while throwing a straight left that knocked Daniels out cold. It was similar to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s knockout shot on Ricardo Arona “Pride Final Conflict 2005.”
Heavyweight Junior dos Santos put Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep when he landed a short left hook in the 1stRound that dropped the former top contender, then met him at the canvas with additional strikes.
Clay Guida pocked his bonus after he locking an arm-triangle choke on Shannon Gugerty in the 2ndRound of their preliminary bout.
Not only was this card the UFC’s debut on Versus, but it was also the first MMA event on the network since the its return to DirecTV. The potential 18 million households that purchase the satellite service should certainly help with the show’s overall ratings which will be released within the next couple of days.
Knockout of the Night:
John Howard, Junior dos Santos and Jon Jones ($50,000/each)
Submission of the Night:
Clay Guida ($50,000)
