EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields has agreed to take on former UFC veteran Joe Riggs at Strikeforce’s April 11th event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The card will mark the first of 16 events that Strikeforce will be broadcasting on Showtime over the next three years.
Shields finally won his first major title at “EliteXC: Unfinished Business” last July when he defeated Nick Thompson for the open belt. Because of EliteXC ‘s financial woes, he was only able to defend his title once against Paul Daley at “EliteXC: Heat.”
Now Shields has to start over again, as he sets his sights on becoming Strikeforce’s first ever 170-pound champion.
The 30-year-old will be taking on a very game Riggs, who has gone 4-2 since leaving the UFC in 2006. In his last bout, Riggs defeated Luke Stewart at “Strikeforce: Destruction” this past November.
