The anticipation for Strikeforce’s “Shamrock vs. Diaz” promotion is building by the day. This will mark the newly-revamped MMA organization’s first event since signing a 16 event agreement with Showtime. More information has just come out regarding this monumental 2009 debut.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAWeekly.com that he offered former EliteXC lightweight champion KJ Noons an opportunity to not only co-headline the night’s event, but also a chance to regain a title by taking on Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson.
Remember, nobody ever defeated Noons for his title, he was stripped of his belt by EliteXC management after he refused to defend it.
Regardless, Noons’ manager, Mark Dion, said that Noons intends to keep his focus on boxing for the time being.
Regarding their upcoming April 11th event, Strikeforce matchmaker Javier Mendez said they are currently scouring the globe to find challenging and entertaining matcups for Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
Cyborg is currently on medical suspension, and would have to petition the California State Athletic Commission for approval before she could officially compete.
Mendez confirmed that Japanese sensation Mitsuhiro Ishida is “definitely a name that’s been tossed around” for Melendez. Talks are in the preliminary stages and nothing has been committed to by either party.
