Strikeforce management initially stated that they were scouring the globe in search of challenging opponents for Gilbert Melendez and Strikeforece lightweight champion Josh Thomson for their April 11th event. It now appears that the best opponents that they could find were each other.
Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz confirmed with MMAjunkie.com that the two will indeed tango again at “Shamrock vs. Diaz” at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
Originally, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was attempting to have Thomson square off against former EliteXC lightweight champion KJ Noons as the night’s co-main event. However Noons and his management turned down the offer stating that they intend to focus on boxing for the time being.
In their first meeting last June, Thomson dominated his former training partner through all 5Rounds, walking away with a unanimous decision (50-45, all three judges) victory, as well as the Strikeforce title.
Melendez, who was once considered one of the best lightweights in the world, certainly needs this bout more than the champ. He has dropped two of his last three fights, and hasn’t fought since receiving the beating from Thomson.
