After initially stating Alistair Overeem’s heavyweight title would not be on the line against Brett Rogers at “Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery,” it appears the organization has had a change of heart and the two will collide in a 5Round championship affair on May 15th.
Strikeforce official Mike Afromowitz confirmed the change late Sunday night with MMAWeekly.com.
Overeem holds a dominant 32-11 MMA record, however this will mark his first Strikeforce appearance since whooping Paul Buentello to capture the open heavyweight title back in November 2007.
He’s since fought outside of the promotion on seven separate occasions.
Although fans would like to see Overeem actually defend his crown for a change, it’s a precarious move by Strikeforce considering Rogers is coming off his first career defeat.
Rogers stakes claim to a 10-1 professional record and has finished in all of his wins. Unfortunately, Rogers attempted the highly ineffective face-to-fist defense against Fedor Emelianenko and wound up paying dearly for it.
The Showtime broadcast will be jumping off inside the Scottrade Center in St Louis, Missouri – site of last June’s “Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” event.
Here are the fighters slated/rumored for the organization’s second major 2010 promotion:
Roger Gracie vs. Kevin Randleman
Antwain Britt vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante
Andrei Arlovski vs. Antonio Silva
Brett Rogers vs. Alistair Overeem (Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion)
