A key factor in Zuffa, LLC’s decision to dismantle the WEC’s welterweight division was their ability to promote WEC champ Carlos Condit to their most talented division. It enabled the UFC to house eight of the world’s top 170-pounders, and UFC president Dana White loves it.
“I think it’s exciting, it’s interesting,” stated an enthusiastic White. “He’s been so dominant over at the WEC in that weight division and it’s going to be fun to see him come into the UFC and that’s a free fight on Spike. I’m actually excited about that fight, a lot of people are pumped for that.”
In fact, his UFC Fight Night 18 tango with Martin Kampmann will have huge ramifications for not only these two, but the entire division.
Although it will only mark Kampmann’s second bout at 170 for the UFC, he has won 10 of his last 11 fights.
For Condit, White indicates that he could find himself in a 5Round bout sooner rather than later if he has a good showing on April Fool’s Day.
“Definitely,” White said about Condit’s UFC title hopes. “I think him coming over as the champ, we’ll see how he looks in this fight here, and I’m excited about him. Excited to see how he does. He’s a good kid and always exciting to watch, too.”
