Word spread over the weekend that Strikeforce was changing the location and date for their second event of 2009. Although Strikeforce officials have not officially confirmed anything, future UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes states that his partner’s bout will indeed be moved to June 6th.
Who needs company confirmation when you have Matt Hughes? The former champ is not only announcing the new date, but he is also indicating the event will now be held in St. Louis, Missouri instead of Seattle, Washington as initially planned.
“Just found out a few days ago that Robbie Lawler will fight Jake Shields on the Strikeforce card on June 6th in St. Louis,” Hughes wrote. “It’s great to have Robbie fight that close to home. We were worried that he would fight in the month of May close to my fight, so it actually turns out to be a pretty good schedule. As always, Robbie’s a performer and puts on fights that people want to see.”
Although Hughes believes he has the inside scoop on Strikeforce’s schedule, company director of communications Mike Afromowitz stated that nothing has been decided.
“It’s just a rumor right now,” Afromowitz said. “We don’t have any kind of deal in place.”
Shields and Lawler will be clashing at a catch-weight of 182 pounds. As of now, they will be headlining the night’s event, however Strikeforce was able to confirm that both Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Renato “Babalu” Sobral will be competing on the card as well, however no opponents have yet to be confirmed.
If forum chatter holds true, a Cavalcante vs. Babalu matchup would easily co-headline the June 6th card.
As of now, here are the fighters Rumored to be fighting in the night’s card:
Kim Couture vs. TBD
Joey Villasenor vs. TBD
Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos vs. TBD
Torrance Taylor vs. Lyle Beerbohm
