UFC lightweight top contender Kenny Florian has been waiting for his shot at BJ Penn’s title for quite some time. He even took on two additional fights to prove his worth, however feels that it’s now time to put Penn to paper.
Due to the Hawaiian’s unwavering pursuit to conquer multiple weight classes, he hasn’t defended his 155-pound title since defeating Sean Sherk at UFC 84 in May of last year.
Ten months later and Florian is still twiddling his thumbs, waiting to get called out of the bullpen.
“At the end of the day, I just want this fight to be signed,” Florian said on this week’s edition of MMA LIVE. “Let’s get an event, let’s get a date, and let’s make it happen.”
It was rumored that UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta posted on the popular “Underground Forums” that the organization was in the process of finalizing a bout between the two for UFC 101 on August 8th.
“Do you believe everything you read on the forums?” Florian sarcastically asked.
Although Florian knows that MMA chatrooms don’t always provide the most accurate information, he is hopeful that he will be getting his shot later this summer.
“Hopefully it is true,” Florian said. “August 8, it’s supposed to be in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center, which would be phenomenal for me. I’m from the East Coast.”
Florian is currently riding a six-fight winning streak, with his last two coming in dominating fashion against the likes of Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson, respectively.
“I think the fans want to see Penn against Florian,” Florian said.
We sure do, but not as badly as Florian wants to see it.
