Apparently, the only thing that a 1-2 record gets you is a one-way ticket to the unemployment line. Akihiro Gono has been released by the UFC following his loss to Jon Fitch at UFC 94. The January bout marked Gono’s second consecutive “L” inside the Octagon.
Fortunately for Gono, he has the luxury of returning to his homeland to secure a new job, as Japan’s Sengoku promotion is already in talks with the flamboyant fighter.
Since his MMA debut in 1997, Gono has toured all of Japan’s MMA circuits. He competed for the Shooto, Pancrase, and PrideFC promotions before joining the UFC late in 2007.
If Gono signs with Sengoku, it would mark his first fight on his home soil since 2006.
If they are able to close a deal within the coming weeks, it is possible that he could be added to their Sengoku 8 event on May 22nd.
