Although Josh Barnett states he is totally down to exchange leather with WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, he says he would stay away from the rumored game of chicken with UFC 100.
“Here’s my unsolicited comment for those putting Affliction 3 together: There’s about nine months left to go in this year,” Barnett said on this week’s edition of Inside MMA. “I think I would avoid the UFC 100 head-to-head card.”
The rumor mill went into hyper-drive last week when word hit the streets that Affliction Entertainment was contemplating hosting their third MMA promotion on July 11th for the everyday low price of Free.99. Coincidentally, the UFC is hosting their monumental UFC 100 show that same summer evening.
“(But) I haven’t finalized [the date. Scheduling an event for July 11] is a thought in the back of my head, but whether it’s going to happen or not is a different story,” Affliction vice president Tom Atencio recently said.
Atencio anticipated both Emelianenko and Barnett would be competing on the card, however did not plan on having them fight each other.
That heavyweight clash is the ace up Affliction’s sleeve, so financially you can see why they wouldn’t want to produce a fight of that magnitude without pay-per-view revenue.
“I’ve heard nothing. I know nothing. I see nothing,” Barnett said about who his opponent on July 11th might be.
Although he isn’t thrilled about the prospects of letting another fight go by without having a belt on the line, Barnett is down for whatever.
“What it comes down to is that I don’t have a bout agreement to fight anybody in particular,” Barnett stated. “This is coming up on my third fight for Affliction, with the logical idea that it would lead up to [a fight with Emelianenko]. But as it sits, I’m sitting on my last fight and I’m just waiting for an opponent to show themselves. Whoever is available, I’ll take them, but I know the fans are really hot to see me fight Fedor. It just hasn’t been put together.”
