Four days after Anderson Silva made a mockery of UFC 112, company president Dana White appears more heated than ever. Yesterday, the outspoken promoter appeared as a guest on ESPN’s Jim Rome is Burning to release some steam.
White started the interview by apologizing for Silva’s antics over the weekend in Abu Dhabi, then made an impromptu announcement that “The Spider” would be making his next title defense against Chael Sonnen.
“Personally, I really believe that he was embarrassed by what happened that night, maybe he did have a mental breakdown, I don’t know what happened in the ring. All I can say is I know his next opponent isn’t going to be a guy who’s going to lay back and let him do stuff like that.”
“Chael Sonnen is one of these guys that’s not going to lay back, not gonna do what these other guys [have done]. When he’s been in these positions – when these types of fights have happened – it’s been against real good jiu jitsu guys. Guys that want to get the fight to the ground.
“Well, Chael Sonnen is gonna want to take this fight to the ground, but he’s gonna double-leg him and bring him down.”
Although White made some bold statements on yesterday’s show, the bombshell that sent shock waves throughout the MMA community was his threat to fire Silva if he ever resorted back to his shenanigans.
“If he ever acts like that again in the ring, I will cut him. I don’t care if he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I don’t care if he is the middleweight champion. I will cut him, absolutely.”
White also discussed the status of heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, and his need to “lie” about the “The Ultimate Fighter 11” reality show.
