Although Jake Shields is the reigning middleweight champion, he’ll be entering this Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Nashville” event more than a 3-to-1 underdog against veteran Dan Henderson.
Shields recently spoke with 5thRound.com regarding his first title defense, as well as his impending free agency.
“This is my shot. If I go out there and tear Henderson apart, it puts me in a good situation to renegotiate my contract,” Shields said of being able to showcase his skills in primtime on CBS.
The Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard owns a 24-4-1 professional record and is riding a 13-fight winning streak into the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Although he was afforded the opportunity to extend his current Strikeforce deal prior to accepting the showdown, Shields decided that he wanted to let his game do the talking for him.
“I considered renegotiating my contract before this fight, but I really wanted to be a free agent and see where things go from there,” Shields confidently stated.
Henderson holds an impressive 25-7 mark and is the only man to simultaneously hold two major MMA titles, PrideFC’s 185 and 205-pound crowns. He was last seen putting Michael Bisping to sleep at UFC 100 last July.
The middleweights will headline this weekend’s extravaganza, which will be airing on CBS at 9PM ET/PT.
