After losing a fight that he appeared to have complete control of, it was announced that Strikeforce middleweight Benji Radach sustained a broken right hand in his 3rdRound loss to Scott Smith at “Shamrock vs. Diaz” last night.

Radach’s agent, Ken Pavia, stated that his mit was actually shattered and will require immediate surgery.

“He shattered his hand in the 1stRound,” Pavia disappointingly said. “He’ll need surgery tonight.”

It was surprising to hear that Radach had injured himself so early into the fight, as he was dominating the stand up exchanges with Smith through two rounds.

In fact, Radach was humiliating Smith across the board with jabs, power shots and knockdowns. Radach’s best opportunity to finish was after he landed a right with about two minutes to go in the 2ndRound.

Smith was loopy for quite some time, however instead of flurrying with strikes to end the bout, Radach decided to attempt a low-percentage standing guillotine choke. Radach didn’t try to pull guard and strengthen his submission attempt, in addition, Smith had one of his arms underneath the choke to protect himself.

Although Smith was on the brink of defeat when the 2ndRound horn sounded, he came out with guns-a-blazin’ in the fight’s final round.

“There was honestly about three times I thought the fight was over … and I was done,” Smith said after the fight.

Radach was likely ahead on all three of the judges scorecards, needing only to execute a less aggressive 3rdRound strategy to seal the victory. However Radach chose to came out swinging, as he did for the previous 10 minutes, and Smith dropped him with a devastating right.
