Leading into their Strikeforce showdown on Saturday night, Frank Shamrock stated that he intended to put the outspoken Nick Diaz through his MMA clinic. Unfortunately for the 36-year-old, it was the youngster that thoroughly schooled him.
“I trained for him 100 percent,” Shamrock said. “I didnt take him lightly. I knew he was a dangerous opponent. But I always step up. I always fight the best. I always come to entertain.”
Although Shamrock is 11 years Diaz’ elder, youth was served throughout their entire fight. Diaz overwhelmed the MMA legend with his length, speed and stand up skills. The Cesar Gracie-trained fighter peppered Shamrock’s grill with unanswered jabs and strikes until he finally dropped him.
“He hit me in the gut, and that was about all the juice I had in me,” Shamrock said of the final shot that sent him to the canvas. “He doubled me over.”
The bitter rivals were involved in numerous verbal spats before their scrap, but it was all respect after referee “Big” John McCarthy pulled Diaz off of the fallen Shamrock at 3:57 in the 2ndRound.
“It’s hard to hate that guy,” said Diaz, who trained with Shamrock back in the day. “He’s been doing what I want to do and saying what I want to say for a long time.”
Perhaps the best words to describe what took place inside of the cage at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California were spoken by the elder-statesman.
“Nick kicked my ass tonight,” Shamrock humbly said. “There’s no two ways about it. He beat me.”
