Despite facing the toughest test of his career tonight when he puts his middleweight crown on the line against Dan Henderson, Strikeforce champ Jake Shields can’t avoid questions regarding his impending free agency.
“This is my shot. If I go out there and tear Henderson apart, it puts me in a good situation to renegotiate my contract,” Shields said of being able to showcase his skills in primtime on CBS.
The Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard owns a 24-4-1 professional record and is riding a 13-fight winning streak into the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Although he was afforded the opportunity to extend his current Strikeforce deal prior to accepting the showdown, Shields decided that he wanted to let his game do the talking for him.
“I considered renegotiating my contract before this fight, but I really wanted to be a free agent and see where things go from there,” Shields confidently stated.
Shields has long professed his desires to compete against the world’s best, and if that is indeed the case, the UFC houses the planet’s top dogs in the welterweight and middleweight divisions.
Shields and Hendo will headline tonight’s “Strikeforce: Nashville” event inside the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee. The CBS broadcast will feature a trio of championship bouts, with the televised action kicking off at 9PM ET/PT.
